Today we began completed the readings of our first pieces of Native American Literature. Together we read:

  • “The Earth on Turtle’s Back”
  • “When Grizzlies Walked Upright”

Students in 4B completed a guided reading guide  as we read together.  We reviewed this together as we read.

All students completed a graphic organizer to pull out the key details of each selection.  This graphic organizer was the springboard to crafting a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two selections.

Once students completed the graphic organizer, and I checked over it, I reviewed the instructions for creating the Venn diagram and provided students supplies to complete the diagram. Students could work alone, with a partner, or in a small group of three.  Some students will need Monday to complete the Venn diagram; anyone not finished will complete it on Monday in class.

In addition, students posted their wonderings from Notebook Entry 3 (Wednesday) onto a sticky note that is our “Wall of Wonder” for topics we may want to investigate for a mini-project we’ll do at the end of the unit in early September.

Those who finished early started working on Writer’s Notebook 4; many students completed the three writing prompts and showed me their notebook entries.  I sincerely enjoyed getting to read the notebook entries from today, and I appreciate the level of effort and quality so many students showed in their work!  Everyone will finish this entry on Monday if it was not completed in class today.

Last but not least, today was the last day to turn in signed permission forms for the eclipse activity  on Monday.
